BBOGBTD5999 is an Out of Site installation hoax that uses existing packaging for a “Cruzer Mini” USB thumb-drive to hide the fact that the real drive has been replaced by a clay replica with one extra clay top. First, one “Cruzer Mini” was purchased from CompUSA. Once the original drive was replaced by the clay replica, it was taken to Best Buy and placed on the display rack with the other real 1 GB thumb drives. The package was installed in Best Buy rather than CompUSA to maintain the items anonymity. The bar code is a CompUSA barcode, so Best Buy has no record of the object on display and therefore no one is able to buy the item. The drive and it’s packaging becomes a secure object in the department store, and is freed only when a Best Buy employee finds and discards the object.
Also, Best Buy employees make commission on selling merchandise. When you approach the larger equipment such as the cameras, DVD players, and computers, employees swarm. However, if you are looking at cheaper items such as DVDs, CDs, and cell phone accessories, there is a good chance that you could be ignored. Thumb drives seem to be the highest priced items that are the most neglected.
