| The Out of Site project has given me the opportunity to pursue a process outside of my familiar studio practice. Using permanent marker and small, removable squares of clear vinyl, I traced items in my field of vision through windows in public spaces. The process is one of specific attention and capturing—a kind of transient, imprecise, and immobile photography. The product is both a record and map, a sextant that locates my position in space and, if the drawn objects have moved, my position in time. In this way Spot becomes less about my relationship to the items recorded than about the discoverer’s ability to occupy my specific space and my vision; the value of this occupation lies not in the significance of my own view or the quality of my marks, but on the simple act of connection. |
