My recent work investigates the impact of urban development on native woodlands. While the impetus is the disappearing trees in my local environment, the issue of urban growth and environmental resources are broad ones that affect many communities. When woodlands are slated for demolition, individual trees are tagged with an orange vinyl tie. Usually, the mark indicates which trees are to be preserved; but in some situations, the tagged trees are also destroyed when the land is developed. Destruction of woodlands reduces habitat, leads to land erosion, and contributes to the greenhouse effect. This installation is located on the campus of the University of North Texas. Each tree within a given area is marked with an orange tie, suggesting that it is slated for demolition. My hope is that people who see the installation will develop a heightened awareness of trees normally taken for granted, and a greater concern for the environment.
