My initial response to the idea behind Out of Site, to “take away” was conceptually originated and not physically based. The cognitive interpretation was to present to the public, a conundrum, beautiful, elegant, possibly humorous through the unexpected. My proposal to showcase such qualities, which involved reversing the common trend in home construction of bringing the outside indoors, was received by regulatory administrators as political, extremist in art attitudes and an attack against the mainstream public’s knowledge and expectations of “what art is.” These arbiters of public taste, attempted to isolate my work and therefore my conceptual pretext, although it was to be installed in an environment for the pursuit of truth and understanding. I removed myself from the auspices of these self-appointed social auditors and chose instead to do a project more politically oriented.
As a basis for the project, I relied upon Minimalist composer and artist, John Cage’s axiom everything is art, you just have to change your mind. This dictum was cited in my negotiations with those land misers, but had little effect, synaptically speaking. Yesterday’s News is a response to the frustration in dealing with individuals resistant to formulating a contemporary art understanding. I construed a device by which I could export this frustration back upon the populace. Starting and continuing throughout the week of September 19-24, I have been and will be replacing the present-day editions of the local newspaper with those that are outdated and placed throughout several distribution venues.
Yesterday’s News is presented for public digestion as an act to forward the advancement of art is all forms, even those that are uncomfortable.
